How many people know what an "Hydraulic Ram" is?
When looking at a large-scale OS map (The 1930's County Series are best!) you may find a reference to "Hydraulic Ram" whilst you were looking for Ley Lines and, of course, Duck Decoys!
An "Hydraulic Ram" is essentially a device for moving water to a higher level, but using just the pressure of the 'lower' water itself. Ideal for irrigation etc as no powered pumps are required, apart the from water flow itself. It is a brilliant device that just plods on and on (subject to occasional maintenance). If you are near one, you may hear the regular "clank" of it working. The lower water, usually a stream (faster running the better!) will charge the Ram up to its optimum pressure, when it will "spurt" a stream of water via a pipe to a field which is actually much higher than the water level in the stream itself!
If you have a low stream at the bottom of your garden and feel that its water may help your plants, then why not make your own Hydraulic Ram?
Take a look at the following videos which, at least, will teach you about its working and if you are minded to, then construct your own!
